Biography

Dr. Matteo Ponzoni is a congenital cardiac surgeon-scientist whose clinical and research interests include complex congenital heart disease, advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and failing Fontan physiology. He trained in adult and congenital cardiac surgery in Italy before completing research and clinical fellowships in congenital cardiovascular surgery at SickKids. Ponzoni later returned to SickKids as a cardiovascular surgeon.

Research

Ponzoni's research focuses on myocardial regeneration and understanding the mechanisms that contribute to organ dysfunction in patients with Fontan circulation, particularly Fontan-associated liver disease. His goal is to bring together congenital cardiac surgery and translational research to develop new surgical strategies based on a better understanding of disease mechanisms. Ultimately, this work aims to improve long-term outcomes for people with congenital heart disease.
